Local Students Give Back to Community

iPod Donation for cancer patients

(NEW PRAGUE, MN - June 1, 2009) – Students at New Prague Middle School recently learned the value of giving back to their community thanks to a recent donation they made to Queen of Peace Hospital. Eighth graders in Jennifer Berglund's advisory class participated in a "Big Give" project to generate money for charitable organizations. The class chose to donate to the Queen of Peace oncology department.

The money generated went to the purchase of an iPod mp3 music player. The iPod, which will stay in the oncology department, will be loaded with patients' favorite songs for them to use while receiving chemotherapy treatments.

Queen of Peace outpatient nurse, Joan Glisczinski, explained to the students the impact that an iPod will make on a patient going though treatment. She said that some cancer patients receiving chemotherapy may be there for as long as seven hours at a time and the music will be a help for those enduring treatment.

Many students in the class know someone suffering from cancer and realized giving proceeds to the cancer department was the right thing to do. Money was raised by selling homemade dog and cat treats. They also raffled off two Subway restaurant gift cards.

The students in Berglund's class are just one part of "The Rockefeller Team" at New Prague Middle School. Four groups of eighth graders took part in the "Big Give" program that raised money for numerous causes.
